We should be seeing major improvements to the open source popHealth reporting tool as a result of a Challenge Award just announced by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and Health 2.0. It is hoped that the awards will motivate developers to create innovative applications that will enhance the open source tool beyond its current capabilities. The hope is that the challenge will generate new methods of leveraging the program’s current reporting functions and open source framework to help providers better understanding and care for patient populations...

Power of Open Source Demonstrated by Successful Response to EHR Vulnerability
Open source collaboration has tightened the security of one of the most widely used Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in the world. In July 2013, Georgia Tech graduate student Doug Mackey evaluated the VistA EHR for a term project on computer security. That project uncovered a significant security vulnerability, catalyzed a landmark collaboration between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the open source community, and created a textbook example of how the concept of open source can improve system security.

PrecisionFDA: A Community Approach For Submitting & Evaluating Diagnostic Tests
DNAnexus has been awarded a research and development contract by the FDA’s Office of Health Informatics to build precisionFDA, an open source platform for community sharing of genomic information. precisionFDA is a new approach for evaluating bioinformatics workflows, and is an integral part of FDA’s work in better understanding diagnostic tests that incorporate next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies. As a component of the White House’s Precision Medicine Initiative, precisionFDA’s streamlined approach to evaluating NGS-based diagnostics and creation of reference datasets will build a community around best-practices resources and democratize the submission process to the FDA.

Predictions 2012 – The View From an Open Source Foundation
Projects aimed at improving health IT will continue to spark interest, and those funded and fostered at the government level have the best chance of widespread adoption. Some of the largest healthcare initiatives are open source, and funded at the federal level for several years to come. Thus they can ride out the financial and regulatory uncertainty currently plaguing our HC industry. I do expect that on the back end of these projects there is great commercial opportunity.

Product Vs. Project In Open Source
The main reason that open source is good for security is that you can see what's going on when there's a problem, and you have a chance to fix it. Or, more realistically, unless you're a security professional with particular expertise in the open source project in which the problem arises, somebody else has a chance to fix it. We hope that there are sufficient security folks with the required expertise to fix security problems and vulnerabilities in software projects about which we care.It's a little more complex than that, however.
