The App Doctor

Rohit Singal and Greg Zeschuk | The Times of India | September 14, 2011

It's not very often that a doctor of medicine with a specialization in radiology starts a successful tech company. Greg Zeschuk and Ray Muzyka may come to mind, but an Indian entrepreneur may soon join their ranks. Rohit Singal, MBBS & MD (radiodiagnosis). It's the kind of nameplate you may see in one of Bangalore's many hospitals, but that would be misleading. Singal is the founder of Sourcebits, a rapidly growing mobile app company that has made a name for itself in the fiercely competitive world of the Apple Appstore and beyond.

Singal's story reads like the American dream. "My dad bought me my first PC when I was doing my MBBS. And that's when my love for technology started," he says. He describes his aha moment thus: "During my MD course, my institute was looking for a picture archival & communication software. Big companies were quoting more than $1 million for such software.  I was able to build the same solution, using open source software for the university and they paid about $100,000 in installments to me. That was my moment of realization, where it was abundantly clear that I can survive on my passion and people are willing to pay for that."
