Medsphere Welcomes Emma Cartmell to Board of Directors

North Carolina's Central Regional Hospital Joins OSEHRA
OSEHRA is pleased to welcome our newest Organizational Member, Central Regional Hospital (CRH). One of three State psychiatric hospitals in North Carolina, CRH is operated by the Division of State-Operated Healthcare Facilities (DSOHF) within the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. CRH is a teaching hospital that serves as a residency training site for both the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Duke University. They provide medical and psychiatric care to children in all 100 counties of North Carolina and serve adolescents, adults, and the elderly in the central region of the state.

North Carolina's Central Regional Hospital Rolls Out VistA For Less Than $1 Million
Central Regional Hospital, a state psychiatric and medical facility located in Butner, North Carolina, has just completed a full-scale implementation of the open source VistA electronic health record (EHR) system. The hospital, after three years of work, was able to self-implement and customize the fully-featured EHR at a cost of less than $1 million. The 398-bed hospital serves the acute and long-term inpatient mental health and medical needs of North Carolina citizens from 26 counties and employs more than 1,900 staff, including 50 doctors, 300 professional nurses, 700 nursing assistants, 40 psychologists, and 70 social workers. Central Regional Hospital is a major teaching site for 23 psychiatric residents per year from Duke University and the University of North Carolina medical schools. NY State Office of Mental Health to Implement DSS vxVistA System
The rumors circulating at the OSEHRA Summit last week have now been confirmed. It has been officially announced here and here that the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) will be implementing Document Storage Systems (DSS) vxVistA electronic health record (EHR) system in 23 hospitals and 300 clinics across the state. The prime contractor for this enterprise-wide contract is CGI Group Inc. OMH is one of the largest healthcare delivery organizations in the United States. It has hundreds of facilities across the State of New York. The system, based on the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) award-winning VistA EHR system, will give OMH a stable, flexible platform to leverage technology to improve patient care and safety. Obama and Biden Blast EHR Vendors for Data Blocking
As they are winding their terms in office, President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden dropped a stink bomb on the health IT industry. Speaking at different events on Friday, January 9th, the President and Vice President both criticized proprietary electronic health record (EHR) vendors as the primary obstacle to the success of their administration’s health care strategy. This is the highest level acknowledgment so far of the serious impact that “lock-in” EHR software vendors are having on America’s medical infrastructure and the ability of physicians to provide medical care.
On the Need for a Universal Health Record
The current path of progress of the EHR, with its concentration on “meaningful use,” and an intellectual property regime that does not fully exploit the capacity for innovation by end-users is approaching an evolutionary dead-end. It is time to treat the EHR as what it should be: an integral part of medical care that has limitless potential for maximizing the use of information acquired in the provision of health care, and not an impediment to optimal care and a bugaboo for the physician.
