Caribbean Center for Disaster Medicine to Host Second Annual Conference in Sint Maarten
Medical and disaster planning experts from around the globe are set to converge in Sint Maarten for the 2020 International Conference on Disaster Medicine and Hurricane Resiliency. The three-day conference, held March 26-29, 2020, is hosted by the Caribbean Center for Disaster Medicine (CCDM) at American University of the Caribbean (AUC) School of Medicine medical sciences campus in Sint Maarten. Organized by the CCDM, a collaboration between AUC and Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Inc., the event draws international disaster and healthcare stakeholders. CDC invests more than $200 million to help states respond to infectious disease threats
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has awarded more than $200 million through the Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity for Infectious Diseases (ELC) cooperative agreement to help states, cities, counties, and territories prevent, detect, respond to, and control the growing threats posed by emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. State programs are the foundation of the U.S. public health system and are integral to the nation’s efforts to combat infectious disease threats. CDC and states work together to improve local surveillance, laboratory diagnostic capabilities, and outbreak response.

Chan Zuckerberg Initiative Funds Pilot for Open Source/Community-Driven Bioconductor Software Platform for Human Cell Atlas
Fred Hutch computational biologist Dr. Raphael Gottardo has received one of 85 new funding awards from the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, or CZI, an advised fund of Silicon Valley Community Foundation, which are aimed at developing computational tools for the Human Cell Atlas, a global research effort to map every type of cell in the human body. The 85 one-year grants total $15 million in funding from the initiative and were chosen from nearly 300 applications. This set of projects, which were announced April 19, is the third set of grants CZI has awarded in support of the massive cell-mapping feat.
