Capsite Survey Reports PACS/RIS Purchases to Climb

CapSite has announced the release of their 2011 study of Radiology Information Systems (RIS) in the U.S.  One of the highlights reported in the study is that 22% of U.S. hospitals plan to purchase a new Radiology Information System (RIS).  At Open Health News, we always encourage healthcare provider organizations to make sure they check out and consider open source alternatives in addition to more costly commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) products.

For example, ClearCanvas, Oso Healthcare, and KitWare are three companies offering installation and support services for open source PACS, RIS, and medical imaging solutions. Also, open source medical imaging solutions like OpenSourcePACS, Ginkgo CADx, MITK, ParaView, VTK and many others are listed in the Open Health News (OHN) resource database and ought to be considered.  Also remember to check out the growing list of free and open source software (FOSS) PACS and Radiology solutions listed on the web site for Radiology students and professionals.

For many healthcare organizations, open source, PACS, RIS, and medical imaging solutions may prove to be a better alternative to more costly proprietary commercial software products.
