Cigna Named 2013 Red Hat Innovator of the Year

Press Release | Cigna, Red Hat, Inc. | July 15, 2013
Cigna recognized for successful Infrastructure-as-a-Service transformation project built with Red Hat solutions

BLOOMFIELD, Conn. & RALEIGH, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cigna (NYSE: CI), a global health service company that offers health, life, accident, dental, and disability insurance, and related health services, and Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Cigna has been named the 2013 Red Hat Innovator of the Year. Cigna was recognized during a ceremony at Red Hat Summit for its innovative use of Red Hat technologies to revitalize the company’s IT infrastructure and solidify the company’s position as a leader in the health care industry. Cigna also won an Innovation Award in the “Outstanding Open Source Architecture” category.

Cigna deployed Red Hat technologies as part of a company-wide business transformation project to evolve its internal Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) strategy. By taking a services approach to IT, and by utilizing Red Hat’s enterprise Linux, middleware, and virtualization solutions, Cigna successfully designed and created a self-service provisioning system that infuses new life and agility into its IT, development, and business operations.

Key components of Cigna’s transformation initiative include Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat JBoss Web Server, Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, and Red Hat Network Satellite. Using these technologies, Cigna created the Cigna Private Cloud, which renders data and applications as services that can be delivered to internal customers faster. With barriers between development and infrastructure groups removed, Cigna’s teams are well-aligned and able to deliver business applications to customers faster, while carving out costs from the provisioning process to boost Cigna’s bottom line.

Now in its seventh year, the annual Red Hat Innovation Awards program recognizes customers, partners, and communities for their outstanding use, innovation, and extension of Red Hat technology. Winners are named across seven categories, and from those recipients, the Red Hat Innovator of the Year is selected by the community via online voting.
