DocGraph Hop Teaming Dataset Released at Datapalooza
Today CareSet Labs released the DocGraph Hop Teaming Dataset at Datapalooza. This dataset is the most comprehensive open map of the healthcare system in the United States. It is also the largest graph dataset available as open data that uses real names. This release represents the transition of the DocGraph dataset from a dataset maintained by Medicare/CMS, to a dataset that CareSet Systems will maintain and publish on their website going forward. “It’s called the HOP dataset because it more carefully follows the patients’ journey from provider to provider,” says Fred Trotter, CTO, CareSet Systems.

Doctors’ reminders help keep people more engaged in their health care
A study led by Dr. John Mafi, a professor at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, has found that a simple note from a primary care doctor can be a critical way to keep patients involved in their own health care. The research, published today in the peer-reviewed Journal of the American Medical Informatics Association, examined a growing national program that provides patients with easy online access to their doctors’ notes about their appointments. The program, OpenNotes, began in 2010, when 105 primary care physicians invited nearly 14,000 of their patients to view their electronic notes about their clinic visits. The initiative was intended to better engage patients in their own care and improve communication between patients and their doctors.

DoD Announces the Launch of “Code.mil,” an Experiment in Open Source
The Department of Defense (DoD) announced the launch of Code.mil, an open source initiative that allows software developers around the world to collaborate on unclassified code written by federal employees in support of DoD projects. DoD is working with GitHub, an open source platform, to experiment with fostering more collaboration between private sector software developers and federal employees on software projects built within the DoD. Drug-resistant ‘Nightmare Bacteria’ Show Worrisome Ability to Diversify and Spread
A family of highly drug-resistant and potentially deadly bacteria may be spreading more widely—and more stealthily—than previously thought, according to a new study from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Researchers examined carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) causing disease in four U.S. hospitals. They found a wide variety of CRE species.
