5AM Solutions to Add Type 2 Diabetes Risk Calculator to Surgeon General's My Family Health Portrait Tool
5AM Solutions was recently awarded a subcontract from SAIC-Frederick to leverage family health history information to assess the Type 2 diabetes risk for users of the My Family Health Portrait application. The Surgeon General's My Family Health Portrait is an internet-based tool that makes it easy for individual users to record and share their family health history. The tool, based on an HL7 model and interoperable with Microsoft(R) HealthVault(R), creates a "pedigree" family tree that users can save or share with family members or health care practitioners as needed. It is private, and does not store users’ information.
Type 2 diabetes affects 25.8 million Americans, with an estimated 7 million people undiagnosed - they have diabetes but don’t know they do. The Type 2 diabetes risk calculator, based on an algorithm developed by the American Diabetes Association, will allow users to calculate their diabetes risk. Risk factors include family history, weight, and age. My Family Health Portrait requests this information from users, and can put it to use to let them know of Type 2 diabetes risk and prevention. The risk calculator will be provided in such a way that it can also be used by other applications, increasing its reach.
My Family Health Portrait was released in January 2009 as an open-source, standards-based, EHR-ready, customizable software tool. The Surgeon General makes the tool freely available to all users. No user information is saved on any computer of the U.S. federal government. It is used by thousands each month and the software has also been deployed by the Mexican Government as well as by commercial, research, and electronic health records companies. My Family Health Portrait was originally developed in collaboration with the National Cancer Institute, and the Office of the Surgeon General and the National Human Genome Research Institute, part of the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services.
