Press Release | Medsphere, Red Herring | May 30, 2013

Global media group recognizes open platform health IT developer as one of most promising private ventures in North America

Carlsbad, Calif.—Medsphere Systems Corporation, the leading provider of affordable and interoperable healthcare IT platform solutions, today announced that the company has been named to the 2013 Red Herring Top 100 list for North America.

“Medsphere is very pleased and proud to have achieved this recognition from Red Herring,” said Medsphere President and CEO Irv Lichtenwald. “Given the open and collaborative nature of our software and services, this award really is recognition of our customers, employees and investors and the tremendous work they have done together to affordably improve patient care. Our customers have used OpenVista to achieve HIMSS Analytics Stage 6 and similar standards without risking financial insolvency, and they deserve every bit of recognition an award like this conveys.”

A global media organization focused on the nexus of technological innovation and venture capital, Red Herring has compiled separate Top 100 lists since 1996 for North America, Europe and Asia. To qualify, Top 100 list nominees must be privately held, venture backed corporations in the technology / life sciences sector. Winners are also evaluated on a number of additional criteria, including social contribution, market maturity, growth rate, and team quality and experience.

"After much thought, rigorous contemplation and discussion, we narrowed our list down from hundreds of candidates from across North America to the Top 100 Winners,” said Alex Vieux, publisher and CEO of Red Herring. “We believe Medsphere embodies the vision, drive and innovation that define a successful entrepreneurial venture. Medsphere should be proud of its accomplishment, as the competition was very strong.”

Founded in 2002, Medsphere has grown by roughly 40 percent over the past year, and has done so while generating positive operating results. All eligible Medsphere customers have qualified for the federal government’s Meaningful Use program that incentivizes comprehensive health information technology implementation and adoption. In most cases, hospitals that have adopted Medsphere’s OpenVista system will receive more in federal stimulus funds than the cost of the solution.

About Medsphere

Founded in 2002 and based in Carlsbad, Calif., Medsphere Systems Corporation is an award-winning organization of clinical and technology professionals working to make quality health care IT solutions accessible to organizations of virtually any size, shape or budget. The company’s OpenVista® is a portfolio of clinical support products and professional services that leverages an electronic health record (EHR) system developed by the Department of Veterans Affairs. This VistA EHR is widely credited with helping transform the VA into the nation's most efficient and clinically effective health care organization. OpenVista, the most fully commercialized VistA offspring, is a responsible reapplication of the VA’s $8.5 billion investment, which recent studies show yielded $3.09 billion in benefits, primarily from the near elimination of medication administration issues and duplicate testing.

Medsphere’s subscription-based pricing model enables hospital, clinic and integrated delivery network customers to pay for OpenVista from their operating budget with no upfront costs or back-end balloon payments. Expert implementation and other services facilitate fluid and rapid transition to a paperless clinical environment focusing on best practices and evidence-based medicine in six to nine months. Medsphere also actively nurtures the Healthcare Open Source Ecosystem, a global community of customers, partners, developers and other online collaborators who drive OpenVista innovation, and provide a parallel development and support structure.
