About Us

Open Health News (OHNews) is a news, information, and resource portal on all things related to 'Open Health' - i.e. open source, open access, open data, open architecture, open standards, and open communities in healthcare. We have become the premier site of choice for news and information about 'Open Health' information and technology.

One of our specific goals is to become the most trusted source of news and information about ‘open' health information technology (IT) solutions and community activities. Another goal is to help raise awareness of the many high quality open source health IT products that have been developed and the growing number of organizations providing support for these products.

Open Health News History

The Open Health News (OHNews) web site is the culmination of several years of work. Its roots go back to 2006 when it was a traditional paper-based industry newsletter originally known as VistA News.  As its popularity increased and its scope broadened, the name of the newsletter was changed in 2007 to VistA & Open Healthcare News.  In mid-2008, maintaining a profitable paper-based newsletter proved to be unsustainable. However, the need for an open health IT industry newsletter never diminished. Finally, in 2010 a team was formed to create the new, more robust online Open Health News (OHNews) site using open source tools, e.g. Drupal, MySQL, etc.  Development and alpha testing occurred during late 2010, with limited beta testing of the site beginning in early 2011. In March 2011, version 1.0 of the Open Health News (OHNews) web site went into production and OHNews opened for business. The emphasis then shifted to building content, readership, sales, marketing, and continually enhancing the quality and functonality of the web site and services provided.
