Study Shows How Traditional Chinese Medicines Kill Cancer Cells

Press Release | University of Adelaide | September 8, 2016

Researchers at the University of Adelaide have shown how a complex mix of plant compounds derived from ancient clinical practice in China - a Traditional Chinese Medicine - works to kill cancer cells. Study Unveils New Way to Starve Tumors to Death

Press Release | Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis | January 24, 2017

For decades, scientists have tried to halt cancer by blocking nutrients from reaching tumor cells, in essence starving tumor cells of the fuel needed to grow and proliferate. Such attempts often have disappointed because cancer cells are nimble, relying on numerous backup routes to continue growing. Now, scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have exploited a common weak point in cancer cell metabolism, forcing tumor cells to reveal the backup fuel supply routes they rely on when this weak point is compromised. Mapping these secondary routes, the researchers also identified drugs that block them. They now are planning a small clinical trial in cancer patients to evaluate this treatment strategy...

Study: Over 1.4 Billion Jobs and Food Supplied Worldwide Depend on Saving Bees

Building ‘bee highways', reducing so-called green deserts, and helping farmers work with nature could all help, the researchers say in a new report...

Superbugs on the Shore: Bacteria in Estuaries Have Genes for Antibiotic Resistance That Could End Up in Us

Press Release | MacQuarie University | January 31, 2017

An international group of researchers, including Professor Michael Gillings from Macquarie University, have reported that pollution with antibiotics and resistance genes is causing potentially dangerous changes to local bacteria in estuaries. Polluting antibiotic agents in these waterways, they say, help the bacteria to acquire genes that make them less responsive to antibiotics – known as antibiotic resistance genes. These genes could then enter our food chain when we eat aquatic animals from these areas...
