Bi-directional Health Information Exchange (BHIE)

Bi-directional Health Information Exchange (BHIE) is a series of communications protocols and software tools developed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). It is used to exchange healthcare information between VA and DoD healthcare facilities nationwide. It is one of the most widely used health information exchange (HIE) solutions in use today. It is used to facilitate healthcare data between the VA VistA and DoD AHLTA electronic health record (EHR) systems. It was fermerly known as the Federal Health Information Exchange (FHIE).
