McConnell: Wake Forest Baptist Cuts Necessary For Future Success

Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center is cutting 950 positions over the next eight months as a way to ensure its success as revenue from patient services and research grants dries up in the future, according to medical center CEO Dr. John McConnell.

The medical center is coming off two of its most successful years in its history from a financial standpoint, but that doesn't protect it from future revenue challenges, McConnell said in an interview Wednesday morning with The Business Journal.

"This is not about today," McConnell said. "This is about tomorrow and positioning ourselves for success in the future."
