MAeHC and MITRE to Demonstrate Comparison of the MAeHC Quality Data Center Meaningful Use Measure Reporting with PopHealth

Waltham, Mass., February 21, 2012 – The Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative (MAeHC), a non-profit pioneer and leader in healthcare delivery through health information technology, announced today that it has partnered with MITRE’s Center for Transforming Health, a not-for-profit organization chartered to work in the public interest, to demonstrate comparative measure results for meaningful use quality metrics reporting at the HIMSS 2012 Annual Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas, NV from February 20-24. MAeHC will showcase its recently ONC-ATB certified commercially- available Quality Data Center (QDC) in comparison with the ONC-sponsored popHealth tool by MITRE to evaluate quality measures at the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase in Hall G, Exhibit Booth #11000, ONC/FHA area.

To support the growing need for quality metrics in healthcare, the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase has dedicated this year’s exhibition to “Breaking Barriers to Interoperable Healthcare” to provide an educational forum for attendees by featuring health IT solutions from vendors and government-funded initiatives. This year’s solutions include the MAeHC QDC, a standards-based web application which securely extracts, aggregates, and analyzes patient level health information from EHR and HIE systems, and popHealth, an open-source clinical quality measure reporting reference implementation that works with a provider’s electronic health record (EHR) system, to evaluate quality measures for a population of patients, and share benchmarked results as well as observations and lessons learned for providers and vendors engaged in clinical data analytics.

“The future is already here, and it’s in data analytics,” said Micky Tripathi, CEO of the Massachusetts eHealth Collaborative. “The MAeHC QDC is a commercially-available, federally-certified data analytics solution which takes in and analyzes millions of patient records annually. As a non-profit organization, we were delighted to accept the invitation to work with MITRE and benchmark our production QDC with the popHealth tool and to share the results at the HIMSS Interoperability Showcase. As we will show at HIMSS, the tools are available today for healthcare providers to affordably bridge the gap between the limited capabilities of their independent clinical systems and the information mastery required for value-based health care delivery such as accountable care and patient-centered medical home, but we’ve still got a long way to go before we can call these solutions plug-n-play.”

MAeHC delivers hands-on tactical support and sustainable strategies to help providers improve healthcare delivery within their own organizations and across communities. The QDC uniquely helps MAeHC connect communities by providing a comprehensive, on-demand data warehousing solution that seamlessly extracts and aggregates data from multiple clinical systems and provides timely feedback that helps clinical teams improve overall quality.

In 2009, ONC sponsored the development of the open-source popHealth tool by MITRE, a not-for-profit organization chartered to work solely in the public interest, to empower providers to easily perform their own clinical quality measures analysis as well as promote easier submission of meaningful use clinical quality measures to public health organizations. Both solutions support the electronic specifications for all 44 of the Meaningful Use Stage 1 clinical quality measures for eligible professionals. At the Interoperability Showcase, the QDC and popHealth solutions will pull from a common source set of HITSP C32 standard documents, to demonstrate the interoperability of these systems for producing Clinical Quality Measure results that streamline the submission of clinical quality measure reports for Meaningful Use and other purposes.
