Press Release | Elsevier, IJS Publishing Group | August 4, 2015

New open access, peer-reviewed, online-only journal serving the international surgical community

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical, and medical information products and services, today announced the launch of the International Journal of Surgery Open (IJS Open), a new open access journal covering all areas of surgery. This peer-reviewed, online-only journal will make significant contributions to knowledge in clinical surgery, experimental surgery, and surgical education and history widely available to the global surgical community. The journal began accepting submissions in March 2015 and will begin publishing articles in August 2015.

R. David Rosin, MS FRCS FRCS (Ed) FICS FCCOS DHMSA, Professor and Head of the Academic Surgical Unit, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, University of the West Indies (Barbardos), has been appointed as Editor-in-Chief of this new journal. A pioneer in his field, Dr. Rosin is attributed with the introduction of laparoscopic general surgery into England in 1989. He is also serves as Editor-in-Chief of IJS Open’s sister journal, the International Journal of Surgery.

“The International Journal of Surgery has grown so successfully since its launch in 2003 that it is now able to publish only a small percentage of the articles submitted that are worthy of acceptance,” explained Dr. Rosin. “Therefore, in order to continue our mission to support authors we have launched IJS Open, which provides an appropriate outlet for high quality original research that is educational, scientifically sound, and valid.”

Guided by an eminent editorial board, the journal will publish original research, review articles, editorials, and commentaries on topics across the surgical spectrum. Authors publishing in IJS Open will benefit from rapid review, article-based publication and permanent access to their work on www.ijsopen.com and ScienceDirect.

IJS Open joins three sister journals also published by Elsevier on behalf of IJS Publishing Group: International Journal of Surgery, International Journal of Surgery Case Reports (open access), and the Annals of Medicine and Surgery (open access).

"IJS Open is part of IJS Publishing Group’s and Elsevier’s ongoing commitment to the open access movement within academic publishing. We aim to provide a home for high quality research and review articles whose authors want access to first class publishing services, quality peer review, and a rapid submission to decision publication timeline,” said Dr. Riaz Agha BSc(Hons), MBBS, MSc Oxf, MRCSEng, FHEA, FRSPH, Director of IJS Publishing Group and Managing and Executive Editor of its journals.

Andrew Berin, Publishing Director at Elsevier, commented, “We are extremely pleased to add this high-quality journal to our surgery portfolio and are confident of its success. With its launch our intention is to better serve the authors and readers across the surgical community and provide a resource to support the delivery of optimal surgical care.”
