Earlier this month, the 2014 OSEHRA Open Source Summit took place in Bethesda, MD, gathering global leaders in both public and private health IT to discuss the future of electronic health records (EHR) and open source initiatives in health care. This three-day conference is hosted by OSEHRA, the Open Source Electronic Health Record Alliance, which was formed by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to support the open source community around its VistA EHR – the largest open source EHR in the U.S. I spoke with OSEHRA President and CEO Dr. Seong K. She gave me a heads up that OSEHRA has posted the full recording "Industry Day" that the US Deaprtment of Veterans Affairs (VA) conducted on June 18. As detailed in this press release, several of the key technical groups in the VA joined forces to host this day-long event. The event provided an intense and productive discussion of the VA's new scheduling application called Medical Appointment Scheduling System, or MASS for short (gosh, can't the folks at the VA come up with good names!).

Open source collaboration has tightened the security of one of the most widely used Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems in the world. In July 2013, Georgia Tech graduate student Doug Mackey evaluated the VistA EHR for a term project on computer security. That project uncovered a significant security vulnerability, catalyzed a landmark collaboration between the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the open source community, and created a textbook example of how the concept of open source can improve system security.
