Does Healthcare Need More Programmers? Or, More MacGyvers?

Health care is full of black boxes.  As much as we think we've learned about the human body over the last hundred years, we're still constantly reminded about how little we actually understand its working (e.g., the microbiome). As much time and money we spend training physicians, much of how they diagnose and design treatments for patients remain a mystery.  And does anyone know why we always have to fill out so many damn forms? The many organizations working on applying AI to health care are trying to figure out some of these black boxes, although their solutions may come at the price of new black boxes.  I hope, though, that we don't just turn things over to AI.  We still need people to figure out the problems.

Edge computing and the importance of open infrastructure

The "edge" is diverse, dispersed, often independently owned and operated, and comes with a set of constraints not addressed in the average data center. Old sci-fi films painted a picture of how computers would permeate every facet of life in the future. Halamka Gears Up for HIMSS 2017

Next week, 50,000 of our closest friends will gather together in Orlando to learn about the latest trends in the healthcare IT industry. I’ll be giving a few keynote addresses, trying to predict what the Trump administration will bring, identify those technologies that will move from hype to reality, and highlighting which products are only “compiled” in Powerpoint - a powerful development language that is really easy to modify! The Trump administration is likely to reduce regulatory burden but is unlikely to radically change the course of value-based purchasing. Regardless of the policies, repeals, and delays of the Trump administration, we’ll still need to optimize usability and support the four goals of value-based purchasing - quality measurement, total medical expense management, practice process improvement and technology adoption. As I wrote last week, I expected 2017 HIMSS to be filled with Wearables, Big Data, Social Networking concepts from other industries, Telemedicine, and Artificial Intelligence. Half of the World’s Languages Are Dying. Should We Save Them?

There are currently around 7,000 languages being used today, with one language dying every two weeks. UNESCO says that half of the world's languages may vanish in a century's time. And, in my home country of India, 220 languages have died in the last 50 years and 197 languages are endangered. Open science is advancing scientific research by enabling individuals and organizations to collaborate and exchange knowledge that improves each other’s work.
