Calling for Semantic Interoperability Standards That Enable Clinical Data Discovery

Brian Wells | Healthcare IT News | May 9, 2016

There are many promising initiatives underway that seek to combine rich clinical data from electronic health record systems running in provider sites across the county into large patient cohorts and then combine that data with genetic sequences created from samples provided by each patient in the cohort. The sponsors of these initiatives span industry, private foundations and the federal government. While the ambitious goals are commendable and the potential for discovery is worthy of the effort, there are data quality and semantic interoperability requirements that must be met prior to the combining of the clinical data...

Intersection of ICD-10 And Meaningful Use: Clinical Documentation Improvement

Brian Levy | Government Health IT | January 2, 2015

Open mHealth Popular Standard (Part 2)

Andy Oram | EMR & EHR | December 2, 2015

Normally, one wants to break information down into chunks as small as possible. Bydoing this, you allow data holders to minimize the amount of data they need to send data users, and data users are free to scrutinize individual items or combine them any way they want. But some values in health need to be chunked together. When someone requests blood pressure, both the systolic and diastolic measures should be sent. The time zone should go with the time. On the other hand, mHealth doesn’t need combinations of information that are common in medical settings. For instance, a dose may be interesting to know, but you don’t need the prescribing doctor, when the prescription was written, etc. On the other hand, some app developers have asked the prescription to include the number of refills remaining, so the app can issue reminders.

The ICD 10 Extension: For whatever reasons, Congress did the right thing!

Why Is Medical IT So Bad?

James C. Salwaitz | KevinMD.com | November 1, 2014

A 57-year-old doctor I know is retiring to teach at a local junior college.  He is respected, enjoys practicing medicine and is beloved by his patients; therefore, I was surprised. While he is frustrated by the complexity of health insurance, tired by the long hours and angered by defensive medicine, the final straw is that he can not stand the world of the EMR...

“Hard To See Value” In ICD-10 For Physicians, Analytics

Jennifer Bresnick | EHR Intelligence | October 10, 2013

[...] Experts have tried to clean up [the image of ICD-10] by praising the added specificity and granularity of the data that will result from the more than 140,000 codes, but it’s a hard sell to providers already drowning in EHR adoption, meaningful use, the ACA, and quality improvement reforms.  Is ICD-10 worth it?
