ICD-10 Two Months In: Consultants Give an Inside Look at How the Transition Has Impacted the Industry

Rajiv Leventhal | Healthcare Informatics | December 8, 2015

Leading up to the healthcare industry’s transition to the ICD-10 coding set on Oct. 1, 2015, there seemed to be a collective feeling of uncertainty on the part of providers—particularly physician practices that frequently expressed doubt about their readiness for the shift. What’s more, numerous pieces of legislation were introduced into Congress, several of which advocated a “grace period” where healthcare providers’ ICD-10-based claims submitted to Medicare and Medicaid would not be denied due to coding errors. This led to providers becoming even more leery if the transition would indeed occur on the set date, given that it was delayed three times previously...

While the magnitude of the ICD-10 transition itself and the ongoing rumors of additional delays may tempt some organizations to pause in their pursuit of readiness, the bottom line is that advantages to clinical documentation can be realized even before the transition by using SNOMED CT within electronic health records...

Open mHealth Popular Standard (Part 2)

Andy Oram | EMR & EHR | December 2, 2015

Normally, one wants to break information down into chunks as small as possible. Bydoing this, you allow data holders to minimize the amount of data they need to send data users, and data users are free to scrutinize individual items or combine them any way they want. But some values in health need to be chunked together. When someone requests blood pressure, both the systolic and diastolic measures should be sent. The time zone should go with the time. On the other hand, mHealth doesn’t need combinations of information that are common in medical settings. For instance, a dose may be interesting to know, but you don’t need the prescribing doctor, when the prescription was written, etc. On the other hand, some app developers have asked the prescription to include the number of refills remaining, so the app can issue reminders.
