The Department of Defense (DoD) announced the launch of Code.mil, an open source initiative that allows software developers around the world to collaborate on unclassified code written by federal employees in support of DoD projects. DoD is working with GitHub, an open source platform, to experiment with fostering more collaboration between private sector software developers and federal employees on software projects built within the DoD. US Department Of Defense Publishes New Guidelines For The Internal Use Of Open Source For Cyber Defense Purposes

On January 24, 2022, John Sherman, the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of the US Department of Defense (DoD) released internally (and published two days later) a Memorandum for the Senior Pentagon Leadership, the Commandant of the Coast Guard, the Commanders of the Combatant Commands, the Defense Agency and the DoD Field Activity Directors. Particularly, it provides the Department of Defense with new guidelines on software development and open source software, addressing the opportunities and challenges that open source can represent for the public sector, and how the latter should interact in this regard.

The US Government and Department of Defense (DoD) will rely on its Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs) and University Affiliated Research Centers (UARCs) along with industry to educate and put into place practical policies, guidance, processes, and technology to enact the intent of a recently released memorandum on Open Source Software (OSS). This workshop seeks to start the conversation among these entities and coordinate the means needed to elevate, objectively, the trustworthiness of not only OSS but also the entire OSS ecosystem while continuing to benefit from the speed, innovation, and transparency already seen today.
