Informatics Education

Informatics Education was created in 2007 as the business entity in support of the first edition of our textbook Health Informatics: Practical Guide for Healthcare and Information Technology Professionals. Newer editions were published every 1-2 years with the seventh edition published in June 2018.

Lulu.com has been our publisher and our company’s strategy has been to self-publish for a variety of reasons. Unlike textbooks published by a commercial publisher, a self-published book’s final draft can be launched in 1-2 weeks and not years, making the content far more current. Additionally, a majority of the profit goes to the authors and not the publisher. Lastly, with self-publication, the editors/authors maintain control over how and when the book is published and in which formats.

Informatics Education consists of Dr. Robert Hoyt who is an editor and an author on multiple chapters and his wife, Dr. Ann Yoshihashi who has been instrumental in all textbook publication details since 2007.

Since the inception of Informatics Education, the vision has been to support informatics students and faculty. A majority of textbook proceeds have gone to universities for grants and also shared with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA). In addition, grants have gone to support the open source educational electronic health record (EHR) system known as LibreHealth.

The website that supports Informatics Education is informaticseducation.org. Details about each edition are posted there, along with purchase details and a blog on informatics topics.
