WorldVistA just announced that the VA's CIO, Roger Baker, and its CTO, Dr. Peter Levin, will both be speaking at the community's upcoming meeting in Fairfax, VA. The 23rd VistA Community Meeting will take place at George Mason University May 23-25.

The active participation of Baker and Levin at the meeting is a clear signal of the commitment of the leadership of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to work with the VistA community to create a functional organization and code repository so that the future development of VistA is a community effort.

The conference starts the day after responses to the VA's Custodial Agent RFP are due. Thus it will be a golden opportunity for Baker and Dr. Levin to speak freely about the VA's plans and hold a direct dialog with those involved in the implementation of VistA in the private sector and foreign countries.

Those who want to read some background on what Baker and Dr. Levin are thinking can read the following interview with Baker as well as this article written by Dr. Levin. It should be noted that Baker and Dr. Levin have stood up to tremendous pressure from many congressmen who have been trying to force the VA to implement a costly and disastrous migration to expensive closed-source proprietary EHRs.
