AVIA Names Andy Slavitt as Senior Advisor

Press Release | AVIA | May 10, 2017

CHICAGO--May 10, 2017--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AVIA, the nation's leading network for health systems seeking to innovate and transform, announced that Andy Slavitt will join as a Senior Advisor. Slavitt brings to AVIA over two decades of private and public sector leadership in healthcare and technology.

Slavitt previously served as the Acting Administrator for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services under President Obama. There, he oversaw the Medicare and Medicaid programs and the implementation of the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance marketplace. Slavitt helped lead the shift to pay-for-value through the bipartisan Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act and the widespread adoption of Accountable Care Organizations. Under his leadership, hospitals and Medicare partnered to improve patient safety, resulting in 3 million fewer hospital-acquired conditions, 125,000 patient deaths avoided, and $28 billion in cost savings.

Andrew Slavitt“We’re thrilled to have Andy on our team,” said AVIA CEO and Co-founder, Eric Langshur. “AVIA and its network are propelling the healthcare industry forward through collaboration and on-the-ground care transformation at scale. Andy brings unparalleled experience and insight at a time when leadership and innovation in healthcare have never been more important.”

Prior to leading CMS, Slavitt served as the Group Executive Vice President for Optum, which he grew to a $40 billion health services enterprise. Additionally, Slavitt founded and served as CEO of HealthAllies, a venture-backed Internet-based consumer healthcare marketplace. Slavitt is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School and received an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Slavitt joins AVIA at a vital time for health system transformation. AVIA’s growing network of more than 20 health systems is accelerating the way to better, more coordinated care through proven technology. At the same time, health systems have a pressing imperative to find sustainable solutions while facing increased uncertainty and consumer demand.

"One of the principal areas I will focus on is what major healthcare organizations need to do differently for our country to succeed in transforming patient care. We have small scale innovation all over, but until physicians, patients, and systems can absorb and benefit at scale, our healthcare system will remain stalled," Slavitt said. "I found AVIA to have one of the highest impact approaches to transformation and am pleased to be a part of this important effort."

Slavitt recently spoke to Becker’s Hospital Review about AVIA’s unique strategy, saying, “What I admire about AVIA is that they took big pressing challenges, like clinician burnout or post-discharge success, and brought an approach to it that said, ‘How do we find the best innovations and scale them across multiple delivery systems in a way that culturally works?’”
